How To Repair A Tile Roof

How to Do Your Own Tile Roof Repair

Tile shingle roofs are beloved for their beauty and timeless nature. They’re loved for their durability and longevity and efficiency. Although clay tile roofs are fairly tough, they can crack and break with very severe weather or if mishandled or stepped on wrong.

Tile roof repair is more complicated than repairing asphalt shingles. There is more to take into account when it comes to repairs as far as tile roofs are concerned. Not only do you have the typical issues that plague popular asphalt roofs, but also problems unique to concrete and clay tile roofing.

If you notice you have some tile roofing shingles that are cracked or broken and need to be replaced, here are some things to think about before you proceed with your tile roof repair. And, one more thing to consider before taking a single step upon your tile roof — have you contacted a tile roofing contractor for a professional opinion? With that thought—

DOES THE NEW TILE MATCH?

  1. You don’t want a noticeably mismatched tile on your roof. It will be all you and your neighbors can see from the ground every time eyes pass by your house.
  2. The tile must be able to click into place and fit with the surrounding tiles. It cannot be a tile from a different style or different roofing manufacturer or else it won’t fit. This ability to snap neatly into place and fit well with the other tiles is important because gaps allow for the home to be exposed and water the elements to enter.
  3. Save at least 10 tile shingles from the original roofing job for such tile roofing repairs. This ensures the tiles will match and fit with the other tiles on the roof.

DO NOT DO THE TILE SHUFFLE!

Do not take tiles from less conspicuous areas of your roof and use them as replacement tiles in visible areas. These leaves sections of your roof exposed and only serves to create more problems in the long run.

BE GENTLE!

Gingerly remove the tile. Use a crowbar, and only use as much force as necessary. If you strong arm it too much, you’ll break tiles or send them flying across the roof. Start slowly and increase pressure as needed.

INVESTIGATE!

Look at the other tiles around the broken clay roofing tile. You may need more extensive tile roof repairs. Problems could run deeper than one broken clay or concrete roofing tile. This is something a roofing contractor can give you great insight into.

One key thing to keep in mind — be very careful when you walk on your tile roof. There is a right way and wrong way of doing it. You will break clay and concrete roofing tiles if you take a wrong step on them. Be sure to step on the part where the two tiles meet and are the thickest and heaviest.

Also, when you’re focused on not breaking tiles, you might not be paying attention to your safety.

Here’s a Quick and Easy Guide on How to Walk on Clay Tiles

Step One

Step on the bottom of each tile where it overlaps with the tile beneath it. The tile will be stronger in this area and less likely to break.

Step Two

Place your foot on each tile so that the arch of your foot curves over the curve of the tile. Arch your foot so your toes are in the groove between tiles, and the arch of your foot is on the top of the tile.

Step Three

Walk slowly! And keep your weight evenly divided between both feet as often as possible.

Step Four

Step on the high points of the S-shaped or wavy part of the tiles.

Step Five

Keep your feet on separate tiles to minimize the weight you place in one area.

Step Six

If the valley between tile sections is uncovered, then walk there. Also, if the metal or another surface underneath is exposed, you can walk along this to avoid the tile.

Clay and concrete roofing tiles are a costly premium material, if you are not convinced this is a home improvement task you can undertake on your own, then contact a qualified roofing contractor who is skilled in clay tile roof repairs and installation. You don’t want to cost yourself a lot more money by being cheap. Keeping yourself safe and free from injury is the most important thing though, and licensed and insured roofers know how to do this.
